Serving Winston: Ways to Volunteer

Angell Jenkins
At the heart of Winston-Salem are its warm, caring, community-driven people. We can all play a part in the upkeep and progression of this beautiful city we call home. Whether you’ve been here for two months or 20 years, volunteering is a great way to give back, meet some new faces, and take action. Here are 5 unique ways to serve today.

Love Out Loud

Love Out Loud is a faith-based non-profit dedicated to spreading love and light across the city. They host an annual Christmas for the City party that continues to be a great success. If you love Christmas and party planning, sign up to volunteer today! No matter
what your interests are, Love Out Loud has you covered through their Pathways Program. The Pathways Program connects your interests with opportunities to serve so you can give with a passion. Love Out Loud has supported several community led initiatives, from Cycle Recycle to the Brownsboro Community Partnership. You’ll never run out of ways to give!

Bookmarks

Bookmarks is not your regular bookstore. In fact, it is the ONLY independent bookstore to grow out of a successful literary festival. Located in the heart of downtown, Bookmarks serves literature with purpose. Their annual Festival of Books and Authors is always an exciting way to serve. Bookmarks donates thousands of books each year; encouraging the gift of reading. You can volunteer by helping with the bookstore, events, story time and more!

Forsyth Jail & Prison Ministry

If you have a heart for restoring lives and reconnecting families this may be the opportunity for you. Forsyth Jail and Prison Ministry is a faith-based organization committed to people who are ready for change. This organization not only restores hope to inmates, but ignites change that starts on the inside. They provide programs inside the Forsyth County Detention Center and Forsyth Correctional Center to prepare inmates for life after imprisonment. This ministry offers post release programs as well to support individuals finding employment and reconnecting with children and families. You can serve by donating snacks, becoming a part of the Thursday Yokefellow Prison Ministry, help with the outreach to the inmates’ children, and more. Make sure to check out their website to donate and learn more!

The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA)

Volunteering with SECCA is a great way to support the arts! SECCA strives to present meaningful programs and innovative ways to experience the world through art. There are rotating exhibitions featuring the awesome local talent we have in Winston-Salem
and across the state. Volunteers have the opportunity to serve through office duties, exhibition maintenance, special events and more! Enjoy the creative, educational experience and get connected!

Reynolda

Reynolda Village is a staple to our community filled with rich history. Today, the estate is dedicated to celebrating art, learning, and nature. You can volunteer at the museum and historic house by assisting with community days, special events, leading tours, arranging flowers or greeting visitors. Volunteer opportunities with the lively Reynolda Gardens include: leading tours, rose care on Mondays, Wednesdays in the cottage garden, planting and harvesting vegetables on Thursdays, database work and more!
